Rider Spotlight! - The Future's Bright

2 March 2018

2018- a new year, which brings along new opportunities, experiences and an exciting year ahead!

Over winter competition quietens down and intense training commences, focusing in on the small and specific things that will make the big differences and improvements in the arena. Although the months have passed very quickly and we are back in competition season already!

Last August we welcomed a new member onto the team, 4 yr old Luna, who was very kindly bought for me as a future prospect by Fiona Coles, Creative Equine and 2 other owners. She is based with my trainer Sophie Wells MBE, and is improving and growing all the time physically and in her training. She will continue training throughout this year and has made some awesome progress in the few months we’ve had her, thanks to Sophie. She is a super sweet, soft character(who loves sugar cubes!) with the most gorgeous mane, tail and huge black ears!! I’m excited to see what the future holds for her!!

In December, myself and Touchdown were mentioned in between Charlotte Dujardin and Hayley Watson Greaves in horse and hound, in an article called Causing a Stir, picking out riders who had parachuted onto the readers radar in 2017! Wow! I felt so very honoured and humbled to be included in a page like this!

At the end of January we had our first World Class Squad Training of the year, the perfect way to begin a new year again looking at small differences and those marginal gains which have a huge impact on the overall picture and way of going of the horse. We also had all our usual checks from the vet, physio, nutritionist, farrier, psychologist and many more specialists, the amount of support given is phenomenal and it really is a team effort!

Touch and I also qualified for the advanced medium music freestyle winter regionals (able bodied) in December, and recently competed in the regionals at Bishop Burton, where it didn’t quite go to plan! Despite some really nice work at the beginning of the test, touch took fright to something as we started our walk, and ended up doing some lovely passage instead! This then disrupted the rest of the test, we had some good marks and some very low ones too! It proves that horses aren’t just machines and are unpredictable! It was a very good learning experience for me as a rider, and I took lots away with me before my next competition which was at the end of the same week! All part of the journey and taking the highs along with the lows!

Last week was our first big para competition of the year, the Winter Championships held at Myerscough international equine arena. Touch and I competed in a summer qualifier test the day before the championship as a warmup, as we hadn’t ridden the test in a while! He was a very good boy and we were both much more relaxed this time, winning the class. The next day we competed in the championships and Touch became the grade 4 winter national champion for a second year in a row! None of this would be possible without my amazing mentor and trainer Sophie Wells MBE, owner of the fabulous Touchdown, her support along with everyone else who supports me, my sponsors and family ( mum for being super groom!) is what enables me to live my dream and I’m forever grateful!

This year I’ll be hoping to get out competing internationally overseas and campaigning Touchdown for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon , after being reserve for the senior Europeans in 2017 which was very surreal considering we had only been competing together a number of months! Pinocchio, the incredible and huge ginger giant who I was lucky enough to compete throughout 2016 and 2017, retired from competition last year after giving me the most amazing and surreal opportunities. After seeing him and Sophie competing at London 2012, which inspired me to have a go at para dressage in the first place, to be riding and competing him in an arena was me living my dream, never did I think that would happen!! And I’m super grateful to his owners Jackie and Neil Walker and Sophie for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime.

I’m really looking forward to the year ahead competing Touchdown and watching baby Luna develop, whilst juggling my first year of A levels ( which is much less fun!).

Thanks for the support!

- Izzy Palmer
